Superior Performance, Unmatched Durability

Severance Carbide Hand Files provide 100 times the life of conventional steel files, making them the most economical choice for demanding applications.

Our carbide files feature precision-ground teeth on solid tungsten carbide blanks. Unlike coated files that lose their edge when the coating wears through, our files maintain their cutting ability throughout their extended life. When they do eventually dull, they can be resharpened multiple times.

Application & Techniques

Carbide hand file being used for precision filing

Carbide files provide precise control for finishing operations.

Proper Filing Technique

  • Apply pressure on the forward stroke only
  • Lift the file slightly on the return stroke
  • Use full length strokes when possible
  • Keep the file clean with a file card
  • Match cut pattern to material hardness

Tooth Patterns

File tooth pattern diagram showing single and double cut patterns

Single-cut files have parallel teeth for smooth finishes. Double-cut files have cross-hatched teeth for faster material removal.

Tooth Densities

File tooth density comparison - fine, standard, and coarse

Choose fine cut for finishing, standard cut for general use, and coarse cut for rapid stock removal on soft materials.

File Materials

Carbide Files

Solid tungsten carbide. Excellent for steel, stainless, cast iron, and non-ferrous metals. Most economical for general use.

Best For: General purpose

Diamond Files

Diamond-coated surface for the hardest materials. Ideal for ceramics, glass, carbide, and hardened tool steel.

Best For: Hardest materials

CBN Files

Cubic Boron Nitride for ferrous materials. Excellent heat resistance. Ideal for hardened steel where diamond may react.

Best For: Hardened ferrous

HSS Files

High-speed steel for softer materials and general use. Most economical initial cost but shorter life than carbide.

Best For: Soft materials
